Radio Listening Clubs (RLCs) are fast emerging as a powerful tool for citizens engagement with policy makers in Lesotho, promoting public participation in enhancing transparency and accountability by the authorities.
PSAf has been facilitating training for local communities in establishing and running community based radio listening clubs which will create platforms for the local citizens with engage in policy dialogues. This has been mostly under the Governance and Transparency through Radio (GTR) project, although the discussions of the RLCs always cut across various themes.
PSAf partnered with radio stations in the mountain kingdom to produce and air recordings from the communities in order to amplify local opinions and inform policy direction on good governance and development issues.
Members of the different communities said the RLCs have presented alternative platforms for citizens’ access to information on various development issues. This has provided a platform where local voices have engaged with decision-makers on governance processes that affect them, thus ensuring that officials make decisions that are to a large extent influenced by the wishes of the electorate.
