Situational Analysis and Rationale

A strong media and favourable information and communication environment are critical to the development and prosperity of poor nations in Southern Africa where poverty, ignorance and disease reign supreme.

Specifically, PSAf’s interests for this strategic period of 2012 to 2016 are as follows:

  • Media Policy and Regulatory Frameworks
  • Media Capacity Building
  • Media Ethics
  • Transformation of State Broadcasters towards Public Service Broadcasting
  • Access To Information (ATI)
  • Community Media (radio, newspapers, online publications etc) Development
  • Broadcasting  Digital Migration

 

Programme Goal

The Media Development and ICTs programme goal is an increased access to development information by the poor and marginalized communities in Southern Africa.

 

Programme’s Three Objectives

The programme’s three strategic objectives are as follows:

  1. To increase media coverage of diverse development issues in Southern Africa by 2016
  2. To increase access to information and communication by the poor and marginalized communities using ICTs in Southern Africa by 2016
  3. To support the development of the media sector in Southern Africa by 2016

 

Programmes’s ongoing Projects

The Media Development and ICTs programme currently has the following running projects:

  1. The Pan African Radio Platform (PARP) which is being implemented in Zambia aims at building the capacity of Zambian radios to develop programmes on locally relevant themes and share these programmes on an online platform (see more)
  2. The Radio Platform for Community Development (RPCD) which is being implemented in Mozambique, Malawi and Zambia and targets five radio stations in each country. The project aims to transform the local community radio as an interactive platform where policy makers and the local communities will meet to discuss and develop community wealth creation policies and programmes. The project will use the innovative concept of radio listening clubs (RLCs)to rally communities together to provide community views on what policies and developmental progammes they want to see in their communities.   3. Weekly Monitoring of Local Radios which is being implemented in Zambia. The project aims at facilitating the periodical monitoring and improvement of local radio content by the community radios themselves through the use of radio listening clubs. The local radios will have their capacity built in how to develop community-relevant content and how to conduct periodic audience surveys. (see more)
  4. Social Media and ICTs Training which is being implemented in Zambia. The project aims at building the capacity of community radios in understanding the use social media (face book, twitter, skype, messenger etc) and the internet in their day to day activities, especially in the areas of interacting with their news sources and audience.
